Don Francisco Is Called to Work

A healing hand This is the third part of a folk medicine interview with Francisco Chavajay, un curandero de huesos, a folk healer of bones. I interviewed him while studying at the San Pedro Spanish School in Guatemala. In this part of the interview, he tells us about the first time he healed a dislocation and how the little bone he found on the shore of Lago Atitlán lets him know when someone is coming in need of help.

Interview

Kuk! Tronó y quedó. (De) una vez lo curé. Pero eso ya hace años, hace años.

Yo: Y supo hacer esto sin entrenamiento. (Here I addressed don Francisco as usted, later I switch back to addressing him as tú.)

Clk. Truena. Entra en su lugar.

Yo: ¿Entonces siempre lleva(s) el hueso contigo?…. (Here I started addressing him as usted, using “lleva” and then switched to tú, using contigo.)

Avisa. Avisa. Suena. Se mueve.

Yo: Oh sí que iba a llamarte…

Francisco: Que alguien ve… iba a venir a buscarme.
