Symptoms of the Flu

¿Qué es la grip?
La gripe es una enfermedad causada por el virus de la influenza que afecta la nariz, la garganta y los pulmones.

¿Cuáles son los síntomas de la gripe?
Los síntomas de la gripe son: fiebre alta, dolor de cabeza, cansancio, tos seca, dolor de garganta, moqueo, y dolores corporales.

Interpret

¿Qué es la gripe?
(What is the flu?)

We use QUÉ (rather than CUÁL) with the verb SER when asking for the definition of something.

La gripe es una enfermedad causada por el virus de la influenza…
(The flu is an illness caused by the influenza virus)

…que afecta la nariz, la garganta y los pulmones.
(…that affects the nose, the throat, and the lungs.)

¿Cuáles son los síntomas de la gripe?
(What are symptoms of the flu?)

Here we use CUÁL (rather than QUÉ) with the verb SER as we are not asking for a definition.

Los síntomas de la gripe son:
(Symptoms of the flu are:)

  • fiebre alta
    (high fever)
  • dolor de cabeza
    (headache)
  • cansancio
    (fatigue)
  • tos seca
    (dry cough)
  • dolor de garganta
    (sore throat)
  • moqueo
    (runny nose)
  • y dolores corporales
    (and body aches.)

Ser Contagioso

Los síntomas se presentan de uno a cuatro días después de contagiarse del virus de la influenza. La persona infectada empieza a ser contagiosa uno o dos días antes de presentar los síntomas de la gripe. Las personas sanas normalmente se recuperan en una o dos semanas.

Interpret

Los síntomas se presentan de uno a cuatro días después de contagiarse del virus de la influenza.
(The symptoms appear from one to four days after being infected by the influenza virus.)

La persona infectada empieza a ser contagiosa uno o dos días antes de presentar los síntomas de la gripe.
(The infected person begins to be contagious one or two days before showing symptoms of the flu.)

Las personas sanas normalmente se recuperan en una o dos semanas.
(Healthy people normally recover in one to two weeks.)

Transmission of the Flu

¿Cómo se contagia de la gripe?
El virus se transmite por el aire cuando una persona infectada tose o estornuda. Se contagia inhalando el virus o tocándose la boca o la nariz después de tocar una superficie que contiene el virus.

(The virus is transmitted through the air when an infected person coughs or sneezes.)

Se contagia inhalando el virus…
(You become infected by inhaling the virus…)

…o tocándose la boca o la nariz
(…or by touching your mouth or nose)

…después de tocar una superficie que contiene el virus.
(….after touching a surface that contains the virus.)

Se contagia inhalando el virus o tocándose la boca o la nariz después de tocar una superficie que contiene el virus.
(You become infected by inhaling the virus or by touching your mouth or nose after touching a surface that contains the virus.)

The reflexive verb TOCARSE

(I touch my mouth.)

No te toques la nariz.
(Don’t touch your nose.)

la perilla de la puerta
(doornob)

No te toques la nariz después de tocar la perilla de la puerta.
(Don’t touch the nose after touching the doorknob.)
