Flu Q and A in SpanishWelcome back to discuss more preguntas y respuestas en cuanto a la gripe. This is the final lesson covering questions and answers regarding the flu in Spanish. It is an updated lesson from our previous Q&A on the Flu. In this final lesson, we discuss the complications of the flu and who is at higher risk of suffering those complications.  You will learn useful Spanish when discussing chronic disease and risk.

You will first hear the question and answer in Spanish. Then we we will review the vocabulary before we interpret the question and answer from English back into Spanish.

¿Quiénes tienen mayor riesgo de sufrir complicaciones de la gripe?
Las personas que tienen mayor riesgo de sufrir complicaciones son:
– Los adultos mayores de 65 años y los niños menores de 2 años;
– Personas que tienen condiciones médicas crónicas como enfermedad del corazón o de los riñones, diabetes o asma;
– Personas que tienen el sistema inmunológico débil por cualquier razón. Por ejemplo, las personas que están infectadas de VIH o personas que toman medicamentos que afectan el sistema inmunológico;
– Mujeres embarazadas o personas que viven en asilos de ancianos.

EL ASMA is a feminine noun. However, when a feminine noun begins with a stressed A, it is preceded by the definite article EL. Other examples include EL AGUA, El HAMBRE, and EL ÁREA.

Interpret

¿Quiénes tienen mayor riesgo de sufrir complicaciones de la gripe?
(Who is at higher risk of suffering complications of the flu?)

Las personas que tienen mayor riesgo de sufrir complicaciones son:
(Persons at higher risk of suffering complications are:)

Los adultos mayores de 65 años y los niños menores de 2 años
(Adults older than 65 years old and children under 2 years old)

Personas que tienen condiciones médicas crónicas como enfermedad del corazón o de los riñones
(Persons who have chronic medical conditions like heart disease o kidney disease)

Personas que tienen condiciones médicas crónicas como diabetes o asma
(Persons who have chronic medical conditions like diabetes or asthma)

Personas que tienen el sistema inmunológico débil por cualquier razón
(Persons who have a weak immune system for any reason)

We use the preposition POR when expressing the reason for something: “por cualquier razón”

Por ejemplo las personas que están infectadas de VIH
(For example, people who are infected with HIV)

O personas que toman medicamentos que afecta el sistema inmunológico.
(o people who take medications that affect the immune system.)

Mujeres embarazadas o personas que viven en asilos de ancianos.
(Pregnant women or people who live in  nursing homes.)

¿Cuáles son las complicaciones de la gripe?
Las complicaciones pueden ser neumonía, infección de los oído, sinusitis, deshidratación o empeoramiento de problemas existentes como diabetes, asma o enfermedad del corazón. Por eso, es muy importante que quienes viven con personas que tienen mayor riesgo de sufrir complicaciones se vacunen.

Las complicaciones pueden ser neumonía, infección del oído, sinusitis, deshidratación o empeoramiento de problemas existentes como diabetes, asma o enfermedad del corazón.
(Complications may be pneumonia, ear infection, sinusitis, dehydration or worsening of existing problems like diabetes, asthma or heart disease.)

Por eso, es muy importante que quienes viven con personas que tienen mayor riesgo de sufrir complicaciones se vacunen.
(Therefore, it is very important that those who live with persons at increased risk of suffering complications get vaccinated.)
