PN10 Prenatal Education – Dr. Mendez Interview

By Doc Molly on August 14, 2019 0

Dr. Mendez wears an apron with the profile of a woman's external anatomy where he inserts anatomical drawings depicting different stages of pregnancy. In this audio lesson, we hear more from Dr. Méndez, a family practice doctor from San Pedro la Laguna, Guatemala. In this part of the interview, Dr. Méndez describes how he provides education to women during their pregnancy. He shows us an apron with a pocket where he places laminated illustrations. The illustrations show the fetus within the uterus and the surrounding female anatomy. Since Dr. Méndez is speaking off the cuff… he does not always complete his sentences and he does not always use perfect grammar. Therefore, we are going to focus more on key words and phrases, rather than complete sentences. Before we listen to each part of the interview, I’ll ask you to repeat vocabulary in Spanish. After we listen to the interview, we will practice interpreting the key words and phrases from English to Spanish.

¿Y hacen ultrasonido aquí? ¿O no?

Dr. Méndez

Hacemos ultrasonido.

We’ve had an ultrasound only in the last 8 or 10 years.

OJO: The present tense is commonly used when speaking of things that are ongoing and continue to occur. So instead of saying, “Hemos tenido un ultrasonido….”, Dr. Méndez says, “Tenemos un ultrasonido… ” To see more examples like this, check out the lesson: Time Expressions in Spanish.

personas de escasos recursos
low-income persons, persons with limited resources

para dar educación a mujeres embarazadas
in order to provide education for pregnant women.

los órganos reproductores internos
internal reproductive organs

en el último trimestre

por darles un ejemplo, digamos, este, como

OJO: Digamos y este son dos muletillas or filler words. Digamos literally means “lets say” and it is used before giving an example or when formulating what to say next. Like “um” in English,  “este” es una muletilla (literally, a little crutch) or filler word.

por/para darles un ejemplo
to give an example
