LN01 PET Scan Recommended

By Doc Molly on October 16, 2021 0

Welcome to our first member lesson covering the clinical encounter: Lung Nodule on CT scan in Spanish. In this member lesson, the doctor recommends a PET scan to evaluate a lung nodule incidentally seen on a CT scan done during an ER visit for chest pain. We will first listen to the doctor’s recommendation. Then we will break it down into parts, reviewing all the vocabulary before interpreting each part of the recommendation from English to Spanish.

This lesson is part of our Spanish for Cancer Care series.

La recomendación de la doctora

0:59

The doctor recommends a PET scan to evaluate an incidental nodule seen on CT scan during an ER visit for chest pain.

But a nodule was seen in the lower lobe of the right lung.

Since the image was captured at a moment in time, we use the preterite tense to say, “Se vio un nódulo en la tomografía.”

Tomografía por emisión de positrones

Le recomiendo que le hagamos un estudio que se llama tomografía por emisión de positrones, conocido comúnmente por sus siglas en inglés como PET scan.

Una tomografía por emisión de positrones
A PET scan

It is common to use the full name in Spanish, whereas in English we usually use the acronym PET.

Le recomiendo que le hagamos un estudio que se llama tomografía por emisión de positrones.
I recommend we do a study called a PET scan.

Here, LE refers to the patient. The use of LE is optional, but Eliza thought it made the statement more clear.
Also note the use of the SUBJUNCTIVE following the verb of influence, RECOMENDAR. We cover this use of the subjunctive in our free lesson:  Quiz #2 – The Subjunctive in Noun Clauses. Spanish Grammar members see: Subj04 Subjunctive Following Verbs of Influence.
